About

Abalone by-products

Processing abalone for human consumption generates large quantities of by-products because generally the muscular foot is considered edible and comprises only one third of the animal. Abalone by-products are usually discarded and in Australia alone, this equates to thousands of tonnes of by-products with little or no value. CSIRO and Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) have developed patented technology (WO 2017/124149) to convert soft abalone by-products

Patented technology

Abalone by-products, comprised of shell and soft viscera, present opportunities for value adding. The patented technology converts abalone viscera into a dried extract using a simple three step process (i.e. enzymatic reduction, serial filtration, and drying). Pilot scale production of a dried extract from soft abalone by-products (Figure 2) was recently demonstrated in a joint project by Regional Development Victoria, CSIRO, FRDC, Southern Canning, and Southern Ocean Mariculture. Southern Ocean Biotechnology hold an exclusive, worldwide license to the WO 2017/124149 patent.
